An iPad Air M2 locked to owner is Activation Lock on the previous Air, the M2 model that sat in backpacks before the 2025 Air shipped. Campus buyback lots and summer dorm cleanouts are full of them. Staff or a roommate erases the tablet so it looks honest. The next setup still asks for the Apple Account that left Find My on.
A June buyback line in Ann Arbor priced M2 Airs under the new Air. Students wiped them at the table to show a clean Hello. Buyers who continued setup in the parking lot hit the lock. The previous Air is not a bargain if the serial is still on someone else's iCloud.
Previous Air, current lock screen
M2 Air is last year's mid tablet. That makes it the volume used Air in 2026. Flippers retitle it as the new Air to lift the price. Read the back. The larger serial sits near the model text. If that text is the 2025 Air, go to iPad Air M3 locked to owner.
- The table sticker says Air and never names M2 or M3.
- A keyboard case hides the large back serial until after you pay.
- The seller calls it school surplus and will not show a district release email.
- The price is the lock discount against other M2 Airs with the same storage.
Release the M2 Air from Find My
The previous owner removes this iPad in iCloud Find. Apple documents Activation Lock in HT201365. If the Air is yours, recover the Apple Account first. A campus handshake is not a receipt.
M2 Air is not the new entry iPad
The cheap colorful slab in the same pile may be the new 11th generation iPad. That is a different chip and a different guide. See iPad 11th Gen locked to ownerif the model name is iPad, not iPad Air.
When buyback staff already left
Enter the iPad Air M2 here if Apple declines a claim or the owner is gone. Access is $7.99 per month. You follow the guide. We do not perform the unlock. Results vary.
