A weekend group in Moab found an Ultra clipped to a pack strap near a slickrock trail. They charged it, erased it, and tried to pair it to a spare iPhone for the drive home. watchOS asked for an Apple ID. That is the intended theft brake. Apple designed Watch Activation Lock so a found titanium case cannot become a new daily Watch without the owner.
Trail and gym theft does not transfer the account
Ultra launched as a dive and endurance Watch. That use case puts it on benches, picnic tables, and locker shelves. A thief can factory-reset the face in a minute. They cannot unpair it. Unpairing only happens from the Watch app on the iPhone that still holds the pairing, or from the owner's iCloud device list. If you already paid a trail-side seller, stop sending more cash for unlock codes.

Unpair the Ultra. Do not only erase it
If you can still reach the person who signed in, they open the Watch app, select this Ultra, and tap Unpair Apple Watch. That is the Watch-specific step people skip when they only know iPhone wipes. First Ultra versus Ultra 2
The original Ultra is the 2022 titanium Watch. Ultra 2 is brighter and later. Used ads mash both names together. Read the model line on the pairing sheet and the back engraving. If you actually hold the newer adventure case, switch to Apple Watch Ultra 2 locked to owner. A thin everyday Watch is Apple Watch Series 10 locked to owner.
When the hiker never answers
Photograph the serial on the titanium back. Cellular Ultra units also show an IMEI. Apple Support can review a purchase receipt that prints that serial.
